Historic Victory Marks a Landmark Moment for Gender Equality in SADC

WINDHOEK, Namibia (BG) – Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has won Namibia’s 2024 presidential election, becoming the first woman to lead the nation. The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), chaired by Dr. Elsie T. Nghikembua, announced the final results on Tuesday night.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, the presidential candidate of the ruling The South West Africa People’s Organisation, officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia, secured a decisive victory with 638,560 votes. Her closest competitor, Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), received 284,106 votes.

“In accordance with Section 109 of the Electoral Act, No. 5 of 2014, as amended, Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the SWAPO Party is hereby declared the winner and President-elect of the 2024 Presidential elections,” Nghikembua stated during the announcement.

A Historic Achievement

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory represents a groundbreaking moment for Namibia and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as she becomes the first female president in Namibia and the region. Her candidacy and subsequent election mark a significant milestone in advancing gender equality in leadership roles.

“Congratulations Madame President-Elect. Today, 3 December 2024, is a historic day. Namibia has elected the first Female President in SADC,” SWAPO Party posted on social media following the announcement.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, who has been a prominent figure in Namibian politics, expressed gratitude to the nation during said she heard the voices of all Namibians.

A Trailblazing Leader

Nandi-Ndaitwah has served as Namibia’s vice president since February 2024, following the death of President Hage Geingob, who passed away on Feb. 4, 2024, while receiving cancer treatment.

Geingob was succeeded by Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, who will complete the remainder of the presidential term, set to expire on March 21, 2025. Mbumba announced that he did not intend to run for the presidency.

Prior to her role as vice president, Nandi-Ndaitwah held several high-profile positions, including deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs.

As the first woman to lead SWAPO in a presidential election, her campaign has been viewed as a pivotal moment in breaking barriers for women in politics.
